The design process for the new product at Davis-Standard will be developing a new product with formulated quality and cost targets. The important factor in the design process is the manufacturability. Manufacturability is whether or not the company has the necessary knowledge, skills, equipment, capacity, and supply chain capacity (Stevenson, 2015). IN this case, Davis-Standard does have the manufacturability to produce this product. This product design is important to the prosperity and sustainability at Davis-Standard. The design process of this part is important so that the organization can maintain a competitive advantage in the market.

It is also important to the social and demographic needs of the customers. As customers are demanding more products that are better for the environment this product will meet their needs because it reduces the amount of harmful chemicals that an extruder emits into the atmosphere. An important aspect to the design process is concurrent engineering. Concurrent engineering is the bringing of manufacturing engineering people together early in the design phase to simultaneously develop the product and the processes for creating the product (Stevenson, 2015). This is important because it is a new product and quality is a major factor to the success of the product. Bringing in cross-functional teams in the design process will help ensure that the product is successful.
