Assignment Part 1

Review “Example Leadership Models.” As you review the models, consider what you think are the most significant differences between servant leadership models and other models. Then either create your own graphic to visually represent your understanding of servant leadership or revise one of the existing graphics so that it better represents your understanding. If you revise an existing model, be sure to credit the original source.

Once you have created your model, compose a brief analysis (500 words) that addresses the following:

• What are the unique characteristics of servant leadership and how do these elements make it different from other leadership models?
• Define the paradox of servant leadership, and explain where you see this paradox present in your own representation.
• Based on your understanding of effective leadership, how do you think your representation captures those qualities or characteristics necessary to lead effectively?

Submit the graphic of your model with the written analysis.

APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Assignment Part 2

Find an opportunity to demonstrate servant leadership in an organization or community through volunteering or serving others. Your goal is to serve the selected organization or entity for at least a total of four hours. Submit a summary (1-2 paragraphs) of your intended servant leadership activity for approval by the instructor. Include the name of the organization and contact information for the organizational leader. You will use this experience as the basis for the CLC presentation in Topic 4. You will need to take pictures during your service project experience for the presentation. You will also need to submit a “Service Project Consent Letter” signed by a representative of the organization.

Consider the following quote from Robert K. Greenleaf as you complete the service project: “The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived.”
