Below is the assignment that my peers did

Purpose

Watch the TED Talk Battling Bad Science (14 minutes). Find a current media story that cites at least one research study to advise you on some aspect of your life (examples: drink a glass of wine a day to prevent something, don’t eat avocados to prevent something, mediate for better mental health, etc). The story could be a video, something publicized through social media or an article in a newspaper or magazine.

Instructions

Read through the story and then search for the original research study through the OLLU library. Write a discussion post describing:

• The original media source that you found;

• Your search for the original research article;

• A brief overview of the original research article; and

  • An assessment of whether it is in your best interest to follow that advice.

FAQs:

Q: Does the topic of the article have to related to Social Work?

A: For this post, the topic can be anything that you see floating around the media.

Q: How current does the media article have to be?

A: Find something as current as possible, but there are no date restrictions.

Q: Where can I find an article?

A: Usually there are stories that pop up on social media that spread quickly claiming “new research study finds…” Any of those stories would be good for this assignment as the purpose is for you to trace an article in popular media back to the research article.

Q: What if I cannot find the research article?

A: If whatever is cited in popular media says “peer-reviewed study”, then you should be able to trace the article to a journal article through the OLLU library. If the media says “report,” it is likely something published on a website and a google search might be more appropriate. If you truly cannot find the original article, report in your discussion post how you search for it and that you could not find it. Be very sure that you did a thorough search because if your professor can find it, you should be able to as well.

Q: How can I tell if the research article says something that is valid?

A: Do not use your opinions or experiences as a reference. This is a research course so you need to look at the research in that article. Is the author making valid claims in their findings based on what they researched? Did the media distort those findings? Use your textbook as a reference. You may need to flip ahead in the chapters to look at things like sampling and data collection depending on your chosen article.

PEER 1

The media source selected was found through research and after personal interest in the benefits of drinking tea over coffee. In the website, Want to live longer? Drink this three times a week, the focus is on the benefits of drinking green tea three times a day by improving life expectancy (Market Watch, 2020). The article emphasizes the benefits of drinking green tea through research based on a Chinese Study that has suggested the tea can potentially prolong your life due to its ability to reduce cardiovascular related diseases (Market Watch, 2020). It also uses black for contrast, as black tea was suggested to not be as effective.

The search for the original article mentioned in the website was not difficult to find, as it was included in the reading. The link to the original article was included and it takes you directly there. The original article examines how to reduce mortality through preventative measures such as reducing risks of cardiovascular disease, which is mentioned as one of the main causes of death in a worldwide perspective (Wang et al., 2020). It focused on the effects of habitual tea drinking and how it correlates with reducing risks for cardiovascular disease (Wang et al., 2020). The study also compared green tea drinkers with black tea drinkers when examining which tea had the most effective results. The conclusion was that habitual (3 times per week or more) green tea drinkers showed reduced risks in cardiovascular disease (Wang et al., 2020).

After reading the article on the website, Market Watch, and comparing it to the original Chinese study, it is clear that the website was very misleading. The title of the article on the website paints a picture of everlasting life through the consumption of green tea. The website does not explain that it is restricted only to reducing cardiovascular disease and it is not guaranteed to promote immortality. Although the original study shows reduced risks of cardiovascular disease through consumption of green tea, but it also does not take into account any additional activities or foods that the individuals may be consuming. Personally, I would not drink only green tea and expect to live 100 years. Although, if I had history of cardiovascular disease in my family, I would incorporate tea drinking in my life in addition to exercise to improve my overall chances to reduce the risks of developing the disease.

PEER 2

While searching for my social media article I came across several different topics. I chose an Article from Facebook (2020). The article titled Yoga improves your memory, Decision making and Emotional intelligence (Zetlin.M). The article states that doing yoga at least once a week has benefits to your health. The results suggest that yoga improves memory, emotions, and planning areas of the brain.

I was not able to find anything similar in the Ollusa database however I did find the original journal article with the study from the University of Illinois; however, no research study. The did mention a journal article title “Brain Plasticity.” It discussed 11 different studies of the relationship between yoga and brain health.

I agree that keeping your body moving is good for your health. Yoga doesn’t necessarily cause someone to lose weight however it keeps people active. I also agree with yoga calming a person. Yoga focuses on breathing and that can reduce anxiety and stress. I know a lot of therapists do yoga with children. My daughters therapist does yoga for calming at the end of a session. I am not sure on the studies about improving memory and planning. Every person is different and stating that it improves working memory may be getting a little ahead of ourselves. The journal I found did say that more research needs to be done on yoga’s affects on the brain. Science may catch up to this social media study in time.
